Blade Maintenance 101

6/16/2025

Summer is peak mowing season, and your Spartan Mower deserves to run at its best. One of the most overlooked — but absolutely essential — parts of mower maintenance is blade care. Sharp blades don’t just cut cleaner — they keep your lawn healthier, your engine under less strain, and your time in the seat more productive.

Here’s your no-nonsense guide to knowing when to sharpen your blades and how to do it right.

Why Sharp Blades Matter

A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which leads to:
  • Brown, jagged grass tips that dry out
  • Greater vulnerability to pests and disease
  • Increased fuel consumption and engine wear
  • Slower mowing times and less efficient performance
Sharp blades equal a cleaner cut, better grass health, and that perfect Spartan-quality finish.

When to Sharpen Your Spartan Mower Blades

As a general rule:
  • Sharpen every 20–25 hours of mowing.
  • Visually inspect blades before each mow — look for nicks, bends, or dull edges.
  • If you mow over sticks, gravel, or sandy soil, your blades will dull faster.
  • If the grass looks frayed or you’re having to go over the same area twice, it’s time.
Pro Tip: Keep a spare set of sharp blades on hand so you can swap quickly and sharpen later.

How to Sharpen Your Spartan Blades
Before you get started, safety first:
  • Disconnect the spark plug.
  • Wear heavy-duty gloves.
  • Block the mower deck securely before working underneath.

Step-by-step sharpening:
1. Remove the blades:
Use an impact wrench or socket to remove the blade bolts. Note blade orientation for correct reinstallation.
2. Clean them up:
Scrape off dried grass and debris using a wire brush.
3. Sharpen evenly:
Use a bench grinder, angle grinder, or a blade sharpening tool. Follow the original bevel angle (usually 30°). Sharpen in long, even strokes — don’t grind too aggressively.
4. Balance the blade:
An unbalanced blade can cause vibrations and wear. Use a blade balancer or hang the blade on a nail — if one side dips, grind it down a bit more.
5. Reinstall:
Reattach blades securely, double-check torque specs in your Spartan owner’s manual.

Bonus: Consider a Mulching Blade Upgrade
If you’re mowing frequently this summer, mulching blades are a great upgrade. They chop grass into fine clippings that return nutrients to the soil — fewer clumps, no bagging, and a healthier lawn.
